Tuberculosis And Its Effects On Society Essay - 1602 Words
Tuberculosis is one of the many diseases to which is attributed less attention than it deserves. The media consistently assures we hear about health issues such as Ebola and AIDS, but tuberculosis affects a great part of the word and has done so for decades. Sadly, as a result of the little light shone on the problem, the existing means of informing the public are not ideal, being either traumatizing to the audience or not emphasizing the severity of the issue to the proper degree. To do my part to bring proper awareness to tuberculosis as well as the injustice surrounding its treatment in various parts of the world, I decided to create a musical piece consisting of two tracks, one representing the progression of TB in a person in Peru and the other representing the progression of TB in a person in the United States. This would connect the biology of TB through its symptoms, demonstrating how it affects the body, the field of art, as it is represented using music, and social justice, as it attempts to bring attention to the unequal opportunities for proper treatment available to individuals living in different regions. This interest in tuberculosis and the unequal opportunities available to individuals with tuberculosis stems from watching a documentary entitled ââ¬Å"An Incurable TB?â⬠that explored the impact of tuberculosis in Peru. In the video, two American doctors, Paul Farmer and Jim Yong Kim, grew concerned about the situation and eventually began to smuggle drugs intoShow MoreRelatedTuberculosis And Its Effects On Society1704 Words à |à 7 Pagesyou, and you coughed up pieces of yourself as the disease ravaged your body. Essay On Tattoos And Tattoos - 1746 Words
Discrimination and Tattoos In the past, people used to see people with tattoos as lacking in character and work ethic. In light of the growing popularity of tattoos in the modern age, peopleââ¬â¢s opinions have stayed away from that. While the United Kingdom may not be as well known for heavily tattooed people as other countries in the world, the popularity in the United Kingdom is growing. Tattoos do not affect a personââ¬â¢s character or work ethic; therefore, should not be discriminated against in the United Kingdom. When most people see a person that is heavily tattooed, they do not see the typical hard working family man. They see an inked up delinquent or a drug addict. What they do not think about is that many people love to expressâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In the United Kingdom, there are no laws protecting employees from employer discrimination on the sole basis of body art. During the hiring process, employers can have the most qualified applicant possible with t attoos, but under current United Kingdom law, they can hire a less qualified person who has no tattoos. This practice is completely legal without being considered a form of discrimination. Employers in the United Kingdom stigmatize tattooed applicantsââ¬â¢ and/or employeesââ¬â¢ work ethic, believing that they will not work as hard and send a negative image to their clients (Michael). This kind of discrimination is unjust and unethical. The only way a person can challenge this type of discrimination is if they are directly religious and even then, the employee would have to go through a strenuous process of actually proving it has direct religious ties. With the popularity of tattoos in the United Kingdom growing rapidly, many employers are being forced to cut back on their prejudicial opinions of tattoos. According to the BBC, roughly twenty percent of the United Kingdomââ¬â¢s population has at least one tattoo. Among young adults, the numbers rise to roughly thirty- three percent (Kelly). Heart Of Darkness Essay Research Paper The free essay sample
Heart Of Darkness Essay, Research Paper The imagination of dark and visible radiation is neer clearly defined but the linkage between the two in this novel is evidently clear. Light indicates self-knowledge, civilisation and enlightenment. The darkness is in the rubric and besides the major subject of this book. Darkness represents wilderness, evil and greed. Conrad tells us about the nature of the human? s bosom and how it turns from good to bad. Since this fresh leans toward the dark more than visible radiation, the dark will be our focal point of attending. Conrad leaves the significance of this darkness hazy on intent. In clearer footings, you can? t easy cut down the significance to a twosome of sentences. He ( Conrad ) intimations at and suggests the significance which was meant for the? civilized? back place ( and us ) to calculate out on their ain. This quality I think was meant to do this event ( colonisation of the Congo ) linger in the readers mind and make them experience the creepiness of the whole ordeal. We will write a custom essay sample on Heart Of Darkness Essay Research Paper The or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page One might believe that darkness in this fresh refers to the Congo, the African people who live at that place, how they lived in ignorance, behaved viciously and viciously. This all might be true and to a certain grade should be true. So far darkness is used as a symbol of ignorance and crudeness. Darkness could be clearer to us if we looked at it from a different angle. gt ; Darkness could be a symbol of the white adult male? s bosom, which claims to be an agent of European visible radiation that comes to the Congo to salvage the Congo, though in world it is the white adult male who kills the Congo. It is the white adult male that enslaves the dwellers of the Congo interim knocking them as barbarian and barbarians. Ironic, coming from the oral cavity of a slave proprietor. It is besides the white adult male who is in the Congo to do money, following the greed of his bosom, which is evil and therefore dark. This all comes from the bosom. The bosom that starts out good ( for most ) and from the evilness of greed easy turns black and wretched. To sum up, two constructs of darkness are to be found in this novel. One is natural ( environmental ) and has no existent consequence on us unless we let it. The other construct of darkness comes from within the bosom, which is about impossible to avoid and in the terminal will be the existent ruin of all world. In decision, we could state that darkness becomes more unsafe when it is found within the bosom. It ( darkness ) is the wilderness inside all of immoralities, greed and us. Worlds have accomplished so much but have non gained regard towards one another. We have no right to name ourselves civilized, because about every civilised state has done what has been done to the Congo in order to be considered civilised. Harry Houdini Essay Example For Students
Harry Houdini Essay The performer known world wide as Harry Houdini was born on March 24, 1874 in Budapest. Although Houdini often claimed to be born in Appleton, Wisconsin, Houdini actually came to the United States when he was four years old. To this day many connected with the small town of Appleton still claim the untruth that Houdini was born there strictly to attract tourists. It is clear from copies of birth records and early family records on file at the Houdini Museum in Scranton, Pennsylvania in the Pocono region, that Houdini was in fact born in Budapest, on March 24, 1874. Historians are now finally agreed on this fact. In later years, in a magazine interview, Houdini said about Appleton, the greatest escape I ever made was when I left Appleton, Wisconsin. Houdinis early years. Houdinis father was Mayer Samuel Weiss. His father was a Rabbi. Mayer was Rabbi for a short time for the German Zoin Jewish Congregation in Appleton. His mothers name was Cecilia Steiner Weiss. Houdinis original family pictures are on display at the Houdini Museum in Scranton, Pennsylvania in the Pocono region. His parents spoke only Yiddish, Hungarian, and German. The family was quite poor so most of the children began to work at an early age. From the age of eight young Ehrich Weiss sold newspapers and worked as a shoe shine boy. Please note that when coming to the United States there were often many spellings of names as people adjusted to English. At the age of 12, young Ehrich left home to make his way in the world in an attempt to help support his family. This was a great sign of independence. This is contrary to those who incorrectly claim he was overly obsessed with his mother. However he did love her very much. Houdini moves to New York City at the age of 13. Young Ehrich traveled the country for about a year, always sending money home when he could. Finally he joined up with his father in New York City. His father would die about five years later on October 5, 1892; the move to New York would change his life and introduce him to the world of big time magic. The family moved to New York in the hope of finding a better life there. In New York, Houdini worked as a messenger and as a cutter in a garment center sweatshop, Richter Sons, a tie factory to help support his family. He was very athletic and won awards in swimming and track. He would use these athletic and swimming talents to great use in his future as an escape artist. Houdini began performing magic as a teenager first calling himself Eric the Great. Always a reader, two books would change his life. He read, as a teenager in New York, Revelations of a Spirit Medium by A. Medium, which exposed the tricks of phony psychics, who after being tied up would secretly release themselves to make ghostly things happen in darkened rooms. The second book was The Memoirs of Robert-Houdin, the autobiography of one of the greatest magicians of the day. Influenced by what he read and learned about the internationally known magician Robert Houdini, young Ehrich changed his name to Houdini, hoping to be in some way like his new found mentor. Houdinis first magic shows consisted of card tricks and other simple magic. Houdini early on called himself The King Of Cards. Soon Houdini began experimenting with handcuffs and using them in his acts. Houdini performed with another young man who worked with him in the tie factory in New York. They called themselves the Houdini Brothers. Soon Houdinis younger brother Theo took the place of the boy from the factory. Houdinis father died when Houdini was a teenager. Together with his brother Theo, they tried to succeed as the Houdini Brothers. Their first performances included shows at amusement parks, beer halls, dime museums, and at the Chicago Worlds Fair in 1893. In 1894, Houdini met Wilhelmina Beatrice Rahner, who was singing and dancing as part of the Floral Sisters. They were working Coney Island at the time. After knowing each other only two weeks they were married in the month of July. Bess, as she was called, worked and traveled with Houdini and helped by singing, dancing, and performing the Metamorphosis exchange, which Houdini invented. Bess took Theos place in the act that would now be called The Houdinis. He then travels throughout the United States and then the world for the next thirty-three years. Needless to say he leaves mom behind again proving his independence from his mother, though he did love her greatly. His early travels take him to Northeast Pennsylvania where the Houdini Museum is now located, for 2 seasons with the Welch Brothers Circus which traveled throughout Northeast Pennsylvania. He would return in later years to the Scranton area as a major star, and present several unique challenges. His brother Hardeen would also appear in the area as well. Houdini invents the challenge escape act. The concept of the escape artist is born. Houdini began offering rewards to anyone who could successfully restrain him, first in handcuffs and later in all manners of objects. Houdini escaped from handcuffs, leg irons, straightjackets, jails and prison cells, a mail pouch, packing crates, a giant paper bag (without tearing the paper), a giant football, an iron boiler, milk cans, coffins, and the famousWater Torture Cell. In most of these escapes, upon later examination, there was never a sign of how Houdini accomplished the release, that added to the miracle. Some of Ho udinis escapes, such as the Straight Jacket or being tied with a hundred feet of rope, Houdini would do in full view of the audience. To help draw crowds and sell tickets, Houdini would do escape challenges, often at police stations with newspaper reporters present, assuring a headline story. Houdini is discovered. Martin Beck, Vaudevilles most important booking agent caught Houdinis act in 1899 and was impressed with his dynamic personality and booked him as a challenge escape artist, a new form of entertainment. Martin Beck booked the Orpheum circuit, the largest chain of vaudeville theaters in the country and booked all of the stars of vaudeville. He had a trained eye for talent. He immediately placed Houdini in big time vaudeville as a supporting act. Houdini soon began to headline in several theaters throughout the country. Houdini having invented a new form of entertainment, The Challenge Escape soon would become an international star. Houdini as King of Handcuffs goes to Euro pe at the age of 26. Houdini having invented a new form of entertainment, The Challenge Escape soon would become an international star. Houdini as King of Handcuffs goes to Europe at the age of 26. After some success in the United States Houdini decided to go to Europe in the year 1900, on the advice of a friend, the greatest coin magician of all time, T. Nelson Downs. Houdini created a sensation in London, England and went on to travel throughout Europe for five years as a headliner. Houdini had so much work in Europe that he summoned his brother Theo to work there under the name Hardeen. .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527 , .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527 .postImageUrl , .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527 , .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527:hover , .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527:visited , .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527:active { border:0!important; } .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527:active , .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527 .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ua81fbc01d7b6b5df3471ff47eb29c527:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Computers Should Not be teachers EssayHoudini returned to the United States, determined to become an even bigger star in the country he loved. He would cris-cross between Europe and the United States going where he could get the biggest offers. On one trip here he purchased a building in New York City on 113th Street that was to become his residence for the rest of his life. As escape artist imitators popped up to take advantage of Houdinis tremendous success, Houdini began to originate new and more difficult and dangerous escapes. Houdini invented the underwater packing box escape as a fabulous publicty stunt that was copied by many others. He was the first person to do t he Straight Jacket Escape as well. He introduced the sensational Milk Can Escape in St. Louis on January 27, 1908. He was a pioneer aviator, a fact not well known, and was the first person on record to fly a plane in Australia a feat he accomplished at Diggers Rest in 1910. Some claim he was one of the first 17 record breaking aviators of the day. After those series of flights he would never fly again. In 1913 he introduced his legendary Chinese Water Torture Cell. This was the same year his mother died which was a great shock, as he was in Europe and not told of his mothers illness. He was also the first to do the largest stage illusion to that day, making the largest object known at the time an elephant disappear. This was done in 1918 at the Hippodrome in New York City. According to Houdini the elephant Jenny, weighed 10,000 pounds. Houdini was very creative and introduced and invented many magic tricks that are depicted at the Houdini Museum in the Scranton, Pennsylvania Pocono region. After escaping underwater Houdini would often hide under a dock forcing people to think Houdini might have drowned. At the opportune moment Houdini would make his reappearance. Houdini had great strength and agility that he used in accomplishing his stunts. Houdini also spent many hours studying, practicing and conditioning. For Houdinis underwater stunts, Houdini would practice holding his breath in the bathtub for up to four minutes. He also stayed in an underwater coffin for over an hour. Houdinis film career. In 1916 Houdini began a film career. This gave people all over the world a chance to see the great artist. Houdini made five major silent films up until1923. He is the only magician in history to have starred in 5 films. He also wrote several of them. His films include The Master Mystery, The Grim Game, Terror Island and The Man From Beyond. Houdini was given one of the first stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to the film industry. The star is in a prominent spot out side of Hollywoods famous Chinese Theater. Houdini was the first magician to be so honored. Houdini is the only magician in history to make five feature films, and the only one to have a full length feature film made about his life story. Houdini wrote and even directed several of his movies. Had Houdini lived longer he would have probably made more films, possibly a talking movie, as they were just coming into prominence. Houdinis film The Man From Beyond, as well as Terror Island is on constant view at the Houdini Museum in the Scranton, Pennsylvania Pocono region. Both are also available from the museum. Houdini hated cheats and frauds. Throughout his career Houdini exposed cheats and frauds in the areas of gambling, spiritualism, and psychic frauds. Houdini never believed in spiritualism, but would often pretend to in order to gain entry to seances, etc. Early on he attempted to do a spiritualist act when he was down and out, but found it so distasteful that he stopped and would forever expose those who made such claims. Houdini would write many books and articles throughout his life. They included The Right Way To Do Wrong, an expose of swindlers, A Magician Among The Spirits, an expose of psychic frauds, and The Unmasking of Robert-Houdini, which was up until that time the greatest book on the history of magic. Death to Legend. On October 22, 1926, Houdini was in Montreal performing at the Princess Theater. Houdini also gave a lecture exposing spiritualism at McGill University. In his dressing room at the theater, while lying on a couch backstage, a young athlete from McGill Unive rsity asked if Houdini could actually withstand punches to the stomach as he had heard. Before Houdini could prepare himself by tightening his stomach muscles, the student began to punch the legendary magician in the mid section. Houdini did not know it, but his appendix was ruptured. Houdini did several more shows in Montreal and then headed for Detroit. Houdini did one performance there and then collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. Houdini did not die in an escape or fail in some final escape, as many believe. The greatest ghost buster of all time died on October 31, 1926, Halloween of peritonitis.

Love Essays (201 words) - Love, Emotions, Fruit Of The Holy Spirit
Love Love is an emotion that a person feels inside his heart. People can love their partner; in addition, they can also love their friends. However, if a person were asked to choose whom they loved best, the majority would say they loved their partners more. When comparing love in this way, it would be conceivable that love can be measured. The same can be comparable to our children. While loving other family members, if we had to make a choice, we would undoubtedly choose our children. Loving someone means you are willing to make sacrifices for them. Many say they would sacrifice their own lives for their children, or for a partner. In the movies, when a plane crashes or a ship is about to sink, the protocol is to save the women and children first. However, if a person had to choose between saving himself over saving a stranger, and he chose to save the stranger, this person would become a hero, having sacrificed his life for someone he did not even know. He would be known as having compassion and a kind and loving heart. In this scenario, love cannot be measured, for this kind of lo...

Statistical techniques were employed to verify, validate, and test the reliability of the constructs and their indicators. To validate this framework principal component analysis and structural equation modeling techniques were used. Findings In general, previous studies uggest six constructs for measuring the supply chain management practices framework. However, in this study a framework was achieved with four constructs of supply chain management practices, namely, supply chain (SC) integration for production planning and control (PPC) support, information sharing about products and targeting strategies, strategic relationship with customer and supplier, and support customer order. This framework has adequate levels of validity and reliability. Research limitations/implications The main limitation of this study was that only a small sample of companies in a single sector and country were surveyed, and herefore there needs to be further research considering the special conditions in other countries. Originality/value This study investigated statistically set indicators to discuss the topic supply chain management practices. The framework obtained has good quality of validity and reliability indicators. Thus, an alternative framework has been added to measure supply chain management practices, which is currently a popular topic in the supply chain mainstream literature. Both defined constructs and the validated indicators can be used in other studies on supply chain management. Introduction Supply chain management (SCM) is an integrated approach beginning with planning and control of materials, logistics, services, and information stream from suppliers to manufacturers or service providers to the end client; it represents a most important change in business management practices (Fantazy et al. 2010). SCM is one of the most effective ways for firms to improve their performance (Ou et al. , 2010). With the purpose of managing the supply chain actions for realizing improvement in nterprise performance, it is necessary to improve the planning and management of activities such as materials planning, inventory management, capacity planning, and logistics (Chandra and Kumar, 2000) with suppliers and clients. Currently, the topics that can be considered essential to research suggestions in SCM include: supply chain coordination, distribution and transport, inventory, order management, planning and optimization, supply chain integration, reverse logistics, supply chain information, supplier and vender selection, and green SCM (Hu et al. , 2010). PAGE 18 MEASURING BUSINESS EXCELLENCE VOL. 15 NO. 2 2011, pp. 8-31, Q Emerald Group publishing Limited, ISSN 1368-3047 While interest in SCM is increasing day-by-day, there is no consensus about the conceptual and methodological research bases of SCM, generating gaps in the state- of-the-art of this research field (Burgess et al. , 2006). It is impossible to develop sound SCM theory without acceptable frameworks and definitions of terms (Stock and Boyer, 2009). In addition, the lack of a comprehensive view of SCM practices and the lack of a reliable measure of the concept have constrained guidelines to the practice f SCM and further research on the topic (Li et al. 2005). For this reason, the validation of SCM practices issue has been attracting the attention of researchers. For example, Li et al. (2005) conceptualize, develop, and validate dimensions of SCM practices constructs. Nonetheless, there are no unanimities in determining the set of indicators that can adequately address the topic Supply Chain Management Practices. Studies performed by Halley and Beaulieu (2010), Bayraktar et al. (2009), Hsu et al. (2009), Robb et al. (2008), Chow et al. (2008), Koh et al. (2007), Zhou and Benton (2007), wong et al. 005), -ran et al. (2002) and Tan (2002) pointed out different types of indicators and constructs used. Therefore, studying SCM practices can contribute to finding a better understanding about SCM. Hence, this paper aims to do an empirical investigation of the constructs and indicators of the SCM practices framework. The following sections include a brief literature review on SCM practices (section 2), methodological proc edures (section 3), analyses and discussions (section 4), and finally, conclusions (section 5). 2. Literature background A high level of confusion has occurred amongst supply chain scholars during the ast decades by the several SCM definitions that have been proposed in the literature (Stock and Boyer, 2009). Three key subjects emerged from the various definitions: activities, benefits, and constituents/components. The first theme of SCM definitions, activities, contains the flow of materials and information, and networks of relationships, focusing on both internal (within the organization) and external (outside the organization). Second, the benefits resulting from effective implementation of SCM strategies are to add value and increase customer satisfaction. Third, the components or constituent parts of SCM; what organizations, unctions and processes involve the supply chain (Stock et al. , 2010). SCM practices are defined as the set of activities undertaken by an organization to promote effective management of its supply chain (Li et al. , 2005, 2006; Koh et al. , 2007); as the approaches applied in integration, managing and coordination of supply, demand and relationships in order to satisfy clients in effective way (Wong et al. 2005); as tangible activities/technologies that have a relevant role in the collaboration of a focal involve suppliers in decision making, encouraging information, sharing and looking or new ways to integrate upstream activities. As a consequence, it involves developing customer contacts by customer feedback to integrate the downstream activities and delivering orders directly to c ustomers (Chow et al. , 2008). In this sense, studying SCM practices supports the view theory regarding SCM. Relevant initiatives to identify and validate SCM practices have been reported, but it is worth noting that there is no pattern in defining and adopting indicators and constructs for SCM practices. Tan et al. (2002) and Tan (2002) identified 24 SCM practices from previous studies and formed six constructs: . supply chain integration; 2. information sharing; 3. supply chain characteristics; VOL. 15 NO. 2 2011 MEASURING BUSINESS EXCELLENCE PAGE 19 4. customer service management; 5. geographical proximity; and 6. JIT capability. They used a five-point Likert scale to measure the importance of these practices. Wong et al. (2005) proposed like indicators of SCM practices in their study: B supply chain performance; product differentiation; lead time management; postponement and customization; inventory and cost management; bullwhip effects; information sharing and coordination; buyer-seller relationship; etail strategy; and SCM initiatives. They used a case study and the practices based on the toy industry. Six distinctive constructs of SCM practices emerged, including strategic supplier partnership, customer relationship, information sharing, information quality, internal lean practices and postponement. All the items were measured on a five-point scale (Li et al. , 2005, 2006). Zhou and Benton (2007) consider three constructs of supply chain practices (supply chain planning, Just-in-time OIT) production, and delivery practice), because they have been shown to be closely related to delivery performance. Each statement required responses based on a seven-point Likert scale (1 h not implemented, 7 h extensively implemented). A list of SCM constructs used in previous literature regarding the SCM practices is relying on the extant literature. Koh et al. (2007) and Bayraktars et al. 2009) studies identify a set of 12 SCM practices: close partnership with suppliers, close partnership with customers, Just in time supply, strategic planning, supply chain benchmarking, few suppliers, holding safety stock, e-procurement, outsourcing, subcontracting, 3PL, many suppliers. Items were measured on five-point scales anging from 1 (not at all implemented) to 5 (fully implemented). Koh et al. (2007) m easuring two constructs and Bayraktar et al. (2009) measuring three constructs. A five-point interval rating scale system was used by Chow et al. 2008) with 5 equaling the highest extent or degree. The constructs were: customer and supplier management; communication and speed; and information sharing. Robb et al. (2008) considered four constructs in their research: 1 . customer relationships; 2. supplier relationships; 3. e-commerce; and 4. enterprise software. They used a seven-point Likert scale. PAGE 20 MEASURING BUSINESS EXCELLENCE VOL. 5 NO. 2 2011 In research performed by Hsu et al. (2009), respondents were asked to indicate on a five-point Likert scale (1 low, 5 high), the importance of each practice in their firm. The indicators were: increase suppliers Just in time capabilities; participating in sourcing decisions; geographical proximity of suppliers; formal information sharing agreements; improving the integration of activities; searching for new ways for integration; communicating future strategic needs; on-time delivery; and reducing response time. Halley and Beaulieu (2010) used four constructs (nesting, collaboration, financial ncorporation, and distancing) along with 13 indicators from the five-point Likert scale. Table I summarizes the theoretical studies of constructs pointed out in this section. Table II shows the constructs, the indicators and conceptual meaning used in this paper to measure and validate the SCM practices framework. The selection of constructs and indicators was based on research to reconcile the concepts of SCM (Stock et al. , 2010; Chandra and Kumar, 2000), in which they considered the necessity to manage, plan and control production and inventory, i. e. the flow of information nd materials; the definition of SCM practices (Wong et al. 2005; Chow et al. , 2008), the managed integration and coordination of supply, demand and relationships; and the most commonly found constructs and the indicators (Bayraktar et al. , 2009; Robb et al. , 2008; Chow et al. , 2008; Koh et al. , 2007; Zhou and Benton, 2007; Li et al. , 2006, 2005; Tan et al. , 2002; Tan, 2002). Taking this into consideration, the constructs considered were: supply chain integration, information sharing, custom er service management, customer relationship, supplier relationship and postponement. 3. Methodology 3. 1 Survey design In order to assess the construct of the SCM practices, a questionnaire was developed from a review of literature (Table II), and the respondents were asked to evaluate each question in terms of the level of implementation of each specific practice in their company. A five-point Likert scale (1 non-implemented and 5 totally implemented) was adopted because there are many researches uses the same method. Prior to this, a pre-test was given to professionals in the SC over a 65-day period, and from this pre-test some necessary adjustments were done to the questionnaire in order to make the questions clearer. The questionnaire was sent out to 532 different companies via personalized e-mails. In all, 107 companies responded (response rate only e-mails were sent to each of the 532 companies up to three times each. The participating companies were classified according to the position they occupy in their supply chain as follows: raw material supplier, component supplier, assembly company, distributor, or retailer. The companies were also classified according to their size (micro company, small company, medium company, and large company) and the predominant bargaining power in their major supply chain. The data were collected through an e-survey (internet-based survey) conducted with one respondent from each company (from different areas, such as marketing, operations, supply, and sales departments) of several different segments of the Brazilian VOL. 15 NO. 2 2011 MEASURING BUSINESS EXCELLENCE PAGE 21 Table I Summaries of the theoretical studies of constructs pointed out in this research Author(s) Research objective Construct Context Scale -ran (2002) The first objective was to derive a set of SCM practices and compare how practitioners ranked these practices to enhance competitive position. What is a Social Network - Essay Example Within the healthcare sector, the social media has been effective in the creation of relationships like patient-physician engagement, physician-physician collaboration and has also been a marketing tool for the healthcare institutions (Thielst, 2010). Despite the very many advantages that healthcare institutions have gained from social media usage, there are also some negative elements which are associated with the dependence on this form of communication. The utilization of social media exposes the organization to various threats within the context of IT. The lack of control for the communication makes the information being conveyed to be risky as the source cannot be clearly ascertained and malicious attacks can also be undertaken through the social media. It has, therefore, become important for the healthcare institution to implement strong policies on social media use. Adherence to these policies by the healthcare professionals remains important because it minimizes the risk which the social media exposes the organization (Banerjee, 2015). For healthcare professionals, these policies become the guidelines that could be relied upon the eliminating the legal risk associated with social media threats within the healthcare sector. This enables the professional to maintain their professionalism within the workingà environment.
